Dashboards fail when charts precede decisions. In our Storytelling with Dashboards studio, participants sketch metric trees on paper before touching BI tools.
The exercise exposes hidden dependencies: a conversion rate might rely on webhook latency nobody owns. Calling that out early prevents polished visuals that mask broken inputs.
We also require a "non-claims" column listing what each metric does not prove. Stakeholders may resist, but it reduces passive-aggressive Slack threads later.
Finally, we critique color last. Contrast and legibility checks come before brand gradients. The sequence feels slower at first, yet cohorts ship calmer handoffs to engineering.
